SUMMARY:Jewish-Buddhist Intersections
DESCRIPTION:With Trisha Stotler and Alison Cohen\nIn the United States\, people raised in the Jewish tradition make up a surprisingly large percentage of those who consider Buddhist practices to be an important part of their spiritual life. The areas of convergence and complementarity in these two ancient traditions are remarkably vast\, so perhaps it’s only natural that many people would be drawn to both. \nThis residential retreat offers a space where the two traditions live vibrantly together. You’ll discover a path that is alive\, relevant\, and creative\, both ancient and created anew in each moment. Rather than focusing on scholarly\, neck-up exploration of Buddhism and Judaism\, this retreat will emphasize experiential\, embodied inquiry into these practices and traditions—how do they merge and interweave in our lived experience\, in our own lives? \nThis retreat looks deeply at the universal message of Passover – moving from a narrow place to greater spaciousness – as a way to prepare for the holiday\, two weeks after this retreat. We’ll engage in various types of meditation\, teachings\, and discussion. Most of our time will be held in social silence\, which means that for most of the retreat we will not be engaging in social speech such as chatting during meals. There will be lots of singing/chanting\, and music\, especially our shared voices rising together throughout the retreat\, will be a key piece of our communal journey together. \nYou’ll be guided through a Shabbat dinner on Friday evening\, and on Saturday morning\, we’ll engage in an interactive “Buddhist/Jewish” Shabbat service. As we move through Shabbat\, we’ll begin to return to more speaking and less silence. \nRetreat Schedule \nThis retreat welcomes everyone\, regardless of background or experience level: there’s no prior knowledge of Judaism or Buddhism necessary. Trisha and Alison bring complementary perspectives to their teaching\, Trisha as a Western Buddhist convert and long-time dharma teacher\, and Alison as a Jewish and Buddhist teacher-practitioner who also teaches in secular mindfulness spaces. \nRetreat fees: only cover direct expenses for this event\, such as room\, meals\, and administrative costs.  \nDana offering: In keeping with the Buddhist tradition\, the teachers and retreat managers receive no payment. Donations offered by students at the end of the retreat are appreciated and support the teachers and retreat managers in continuing to make the teachings available to all. DESCRIPTION:With Devin Maroney and Dechen Ellen McSweeney\n\nAs meditation practitioners\, how do we find the balance between restful relaxation and warrior-like determination? During this three-night silent meditation retreat\, we will bring our attention to the paradox of Right Effort in meditation practice\, while walking a progressive path from collectedness to insight. \nDevin Maroney and Dechen Ellen McSweeney are seasoned Dharma practitioners\, as well as psychotherapists\, who enjoy bringing their diverse perspectives into dialogue as a teaching team. This retreat offers the opportunity to investigate the particular conditioning that each of us brings to the question of “effort\,” and to find new ways of holding ourselves in practice. \nThis retreat is suitable for both new and experienced practitioners.
